A Model Employee

In February, finance assistant Beverley Goldstein joined what she calls “a very hip and happening place”. Because Strika produces comics for territories in Africa, Europe and Latin America, Beverley deals with foreign payments, communicates with international agents to keep track of invoicing and delivery… and in between all that she still found time to pose for one of Strika’s weekly drawing sessions. “It’s great working with the Strika staff”, she says, “And their different talents really fascinate me. ISSS JA – di’s duideluk!”

Production Pro

Production assistant Nurahn Abrahams says she was amazed when she joined Strika almost four months ago. She couldn’t believe how complex the comic book process is, and how many steps there are from the brainstorming session to the printing press. But equally amazing, says Nurahn, is the talent that surrounds her. As she puts it, “Everybody is fabulous at what they do.” From the production office she keeps an eye on every stage of the process, most recently completing work on Unilever’s latest SupaSoap comic. And soon she’ll start work on a series of comics for Eskom, her first solo management gig.

Drawing Inspiration

Once a week during lunchtime, the Strika boardroom transforms into a drawing and painting studio. The focus of these informal sessions is life drawing, which means everybody gets to draw everybody else. And it’s not just the illustrators who join in. The group includes writers, designers and anybody else who wants to sharpen their skills… or just Zen out and relax.

Building character

Every Supa Strikas animation episode features loads of cool characters… and each one begins its life at the desk of character designer Debby Pentz. Many of the 2-D animation designs start life in the Supa Strikas comics, and are joined by all-new, specially designed characters who make their debut on the small screen. Here Debby and Bruce join Dancing Rasta, Shakes and Big Bo.
